Packing Your Porcelain Doll Collection For Your Big Move

by Jenny George

Packing for a move takes a lot of time and careful planning. There are many things around the house that you can pack well before moving day and put off unpacking once you arrive. Your porcelain doll collection is one such thing. If you prepare and pack the dolls properly, they can remain in the boxes for months without any concern of them getting damaged before you get a chance to place them around your new home. Here, you will learn how to prepare and pack your porcelain dolls properly.

Clean the Dolls

Before the dolls are packed up, you must clean them. Packing dolls that are dirty will result in stains and discolorations that can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove.

Lightly dusty dolls are quite easy to give a quick cleaning. Simply use a can of compressed air to blow the loose dust off of them.

Dolls that have dirt stuck to their faces and clothing will require a bit more care. Get some Q-tips, water, rubbing alcohol and clean cloths. Dip a Q-tip into the water and wipe the face, ears, neck and hands to remove the dirt. Wipe the doll dry with a clean cloth and check for dirt that didn't come off.

Areas that won't come clean with just water can be cleaned with a bit of rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip. The rubbing alcohol will break down the dirt and dry very quickly. Once clean, go over the doll once more with a clean cloth dampened with water and let it dry.

Spot clean the clothing with water and a dab of laundry detergent if the water doesn't do the trick. Rinse it well and let it dry.

Give the dolls a day or so to dry completely before you begin packing them up.

Pack the Dolls

Visit your local wine and liquor distributor to inquire about some boxes. You want the large boxes with dividers built into them that commonly hold the large bottles of wine and liquor. These boxes are durable and the built-in dividers will help you keep your dolls positioned so that they don't get damaged during the move and while they are being stored.

Now that you have the box, you can box up the dolls. Dolls with straight hair can be protected by sliding each one into a long, thick tube-sock head-first. This will keep the hair in place and the dust off of the dolls. Dolls with curly hair should be wrapped loosely with tissue paper.

Slide each doll into a compartment in the liquor box and stuff tissue paper in around the doll to keep it securely in place.

Tape the box closed and mark it clearly as fragile and note the dolls that you have inside.

These steps will help you protect your precious porcelain dolls while they are being transported and moved into your new home. You will have little to worry about them getting damaged while they wait for their new placements in your new home.
